Training School Status

Samuel Whitbread, in partnership with Redborne Upper School, was awarded Training School Status following the submission of an exciting and visionary joint bid in October 2003.

The awarding of this Status is in recognition of the great deal of good work that already goes on in both schools in terms of staff development and teacher training. The Status and the resources that go with it will enable us to enhance further the quality and opportunity for professional development for all staff at both schools, whether they are just starting on a training course, or having been teaching for several years.

Working in such a partnership will mean that we can share the experience and expertise from both schools to enable us to move forward by developing such key areas as:

Students as Learning Partners
- training students to use their experience about what effective teaching looks like in order to work with and enable teachers to use their feedback to evaluate and develop their practice.

Peer coaching
Teachers working in small groups - usually pairs or trios - to video each other's lessons to enable them to work with and support each other in developing more effective practice in the classroom.

Staff Development
Using the systematic evaluation of individual staff training and development needs (both Support Staff and Teaching Staff) through Performance Management and similar supporting mechanisms for NQTs to identify the training needs of both the individual as well as the Institution and to design and run programmes to meet those needs. This includes the facilitation of NQTs' peer coaching across schools as well as providing their Induction Tutors with the opportunity to do the same with other Induction Tutors a rare occurrence.
