Samuel Whitbread Nursery is a small, friendly child-centred nursery based at the Samuel Whitbread Community College in Clifton. We offer safe, caring and stimulating childcare and a first-class early years education for children from two to five years old.

Staff
The Nursery has a professional team of Nursery Nurses that care for the children in small groups so the children develop a special relationship with one member of the team and this in turn ensures that they receive the attention they deserve to develop their potential.

Ethos
Samuel Whitbread Nursery strives to achieve an atmosphere that enables all children to feel safe and secure away from home. We offer not just day care but a full nursery curriculum, providing children with an excellent start to their education.

Structure
Children of two can join the Nursery in the "Let's Begin" unit, learning to socialise and establish positive relationships with both adults and other children. They develop confidence and independence while learning how to play and share fairly. Children can attend while still in nappies and pull-ups! Parents and carers need to provide a named bag containing nappies, wipes and a change of clothes.

On their third birthday children will progress to the "Let's Find Out" unit. The emphasis is on learning through play and the Nursery offers a wide range of activities relevant to children's age and ability. These include:

  • Sand and Water
  • Painting and Glueing
  • Modelling (Clay and Play dough)
  • Drawing and Pre-writing Activities
  • Construction and Jigsaws
  • Imaginative Play and Dressing Up
  • Singing and Musical Instruments
  • Cooking/ Sewing
  • Computer skills
  • Ball games and small/large apparatus
  • Gardening
  • Movement and Dance
  • Stories and "Show and Tell"
Each child is treated as an individual and will be encouraged to develop at their own speed. The key worker will keep records of achievements and set each child's goals to achieve the next step in the Foundation Stage.

For the older children (4+) we offer a separate unit where there is greater emphasis on independence and a packed pre-school programme enabling children to practise mathematical, scientific, writing and reading skills. Each child is encouraged to share items from home that relate to the weekly theme and phonic sound.
The children in the "Let's Investigate" unit (4+) will have access to a computer on which they can play games that promote simple keyboard skills. The team spends quality time on a one to one basis, giving your child a good foundation in the basic skills before they move on to their first school.
